US Army Rangers before Operation Overlord began
I have to say last weekend while working an air show for my museum I had the pleasure to meet a Darby Ranger from the Second World War. Sergeant Tony, specially trained for night operations and assaults, was 18 years old when he took part in the invasion of Sicily and Italy, and is one of the surviving Rangers from Cisterna and Anzio. During Operation Overlord he climbed those dangerous cliffs at Pointe du Hoc while only a kid and never asked anything in return.
While it all sounds (and is) heroic, Tony insisted that he wasn’t—isn’t—a hero, but that the friends he buried over in Italy and Normandy were.
