In a lesson perhaps learned from the Vietnam War, there is no draft in today’s America despite there being a Selective Service System in place. In fact, the US Military is formed entirely of volunteer troops and only one percent of Americans choose to wear a military uniform. It’s this one percent that carry the battle for the other 99 percent of us, and nothing has ever been asked in return for their sacrifice.

Have a great Veterans Day and thank a vet if you can!

US soldier found guilty in Afghan thrill-killings

A U.S. Army soldier accused of exhorting his underlings to slaughter three civilians for sport was convicted of murder, conspiracy and other charges Thursday in one of the most gruesome war crimes cases to emerge from the Afghan war.

Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs was the highest ranking of five soldiers charged in the deaths of the unarmed men during patrols in Kandahar province early last year. At his seven-day court martial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Seattle, the 26-year-old acknowledged cutting fingers off corpses and yanking out a victim’s tooth to keep as war trophies, “like keeping the antlers off a deer you’d shoot.”

US general booted for Afghan remarks

A top U.S. general in Afghanistan was relieved of duty Friday for “inappropriate public comments” after calling the Afghan government “isolated from reality” and President Hamid Karzai “erratic.”

Maj. Gen. Peter Fuller, deputy commander for training Afghan security forces, blasted the Afghan government, military and Karzai in an interview with POLITICO published on Thursday. He called Karzai “erratic” for recently saying Afghanistan would side with Pakistan if the latter declared war on the U.S.

“Why don’t you just poke me in the eye with a needle!,” Fuller was quoted as saying. “You’ve got to be kidding me…I’m sorry, we just gave you $11.6 billion and now you’re telling me, ‘I don’t really care’?”
