Photograph

In August 1961 Hans Conrad Schumann was a 19-year-old East German non-commissioned officer when, after hearing the calls of Westerns (who had been shouting Komm rüber!) took a running start at the infant Berlin Wall and into the backseat of a waiting West Berlin police car. This photograph, caught at the moment he jumped over the Wall’s barbwire, made Schumann into an icon of the Cold War.
