Vogue war correspondent Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, photographed by fellow correspondent David E. Scherman, bathing in Hitler’s Munich apartment, April 1945

After visiting the Dachau camp, Miller and Scherman traveled with the 45th Infantry to liberate the city of Munich. Upon arriving, the pair came across a nondescript apartment building which they entered on a whim. Within moments they discovered they were standing in Hitler’s own personal Munich residence.

Instead of leaving, they stayed. They ate off the Swastika and A.H. marked china; David napped in Hitler’s bed; Miller photographed herself siting behind the Führer’s desk. After a few days the duo moved three blocks over to the villa of Eva Braun where they repeated their actions and tried the phone simply marked “Berlin”.
