Well, there was a wonderful documentary from the BBC about the mindset of the Japanese in the pre war years. Yamamoto and the navy were often critical of the ruling army corps as well. It really seemed like it was an army led take over of the country

I might have to look into this doc.

And it more or less really was, especially with how the army leeched themselves in the schooling system and began conditioning children.
