After declaring himself Führer, Hitler had the entire military—the army, the navy and the air force—swear a personal oath to him. Not the nation, nor the constitution but him and him alone. For those enlisted, most of whom couldn’t join the NSDAP party, this caused a catch-22: If anyone dared question or raise objection they were committing an act of treason, a crime punishable by death.
