Yes! I’ve been giving this a lot of thought lately too and though I think the new platform-high-heeled-trend is beautiful, when I walk with them they make me feel like I’m almost crippled, it’s like I am consciously handicapping myself. I have to watch where I put my feet, I can’t walk too much, I am constantly in dangerous of misplacing my foot and actually seriously injuring myself. It’s starting to feel inherently anti-feminist for me.
Interesting discussion of the ‘modern corset’, and the pain that women go through to reach our long-legged beauty standards.
I’m sorry, this is really dumb. Who fucking cares what women wear? Why is this ever brought up in regards to feminism? Has it occurred to the people who say this kind of stuff that women might wear heels not to conform to or attempt to reach a beauty standard, or to make men notice them, or for any other reason but because they actually like them and how they look? I don’t know anyone who has ever said they wear heels because they feel like they have to to be a real woman. It really gets me going when people criticize women for being “too feminine” and accuse them of succumbing to society’s feminine standards for simply wearing things that they like. I wear dresses, makeup, hairbows, and (gasp) high heels and I don’t consider myself less of a feminist because of it. And if they’re painful, that’s nobody’s business but the person who is wearing them. I know just as many people who don’t wear high heels because they’re uncomfortable as people who do wear them. It’s a matter of taste, and who are you to call someone an idiot for wearing something that they like?
“But when you’re causing yourself needless pain and suffering? Then I reserve every right to judge you.”
“I do reserve the right to think you an idiot if you continue to totter around in them, though.”
No, you don’t. Criticizing women for what they wear is just as oppressive as the beauty standards and everything else you’re supposed to be fighting against. I wear them because I LIKE THEM (and for no other reason but that) and I’m not going to tolerate being judged or considered less of a feminist because I happen to wear something you unreasonably consider “anti-feminist.”
Can I just make sweet love to everything that @sciascia said because she’s right?
